It's advantage punters once again in the world of golf, with Scottie Scheffler coming from behind to bring about bet365’s worst result of the year so far.
Scheffler powered through to defend his title with his eighth PGA Tour career win, becoming the first golfer to win back-to-back Players Championships. Despite reporting neck pain and falling nine strokes off the pace in the third round – Scheffler underwent two physical therapy sessions mid-round and overcame a five-shot deficit to become the seventh man to win the Players on multiple occasions.
This win draws him level with Golfing legend Tiger Woods – who also holds two wins at the Players.
For the neutral, the spectacle made for a highly entertaining affair. For operators, not so much.
Steve Freeth on bet365 News said: “Scheffler looked the obvious pick coming into the tournament having won the Arnold Palmer a week earlier as well as winning the Players the year before – the only slight negative was that nobody had managed to go back-to-back at Sawgrass.
"Step forward Scheffler, who went as big as 33/1 in-play before overcoming a five-shot deficit in the final round, to lift the trophy once again, despite the need of a physio between holes on Friday. He really is a pain in the neck for the bookmakers!”
Now 9/2 from 6/1 to win The Masters, Scheffler has also gone 66/1 from 200/1 to go on and win all four Majors in the calendar year.
In recent months, the PGA Tour has partnered with the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising and agreed the renewal of its position within the Leadership Circle of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).
