The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has handed a fine to former professional tennis player Luis Horna for breaching betting sponsorship rules.

According to the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program, "No Covered Person shall directly or indirectly, facilitate, encourage and/or promote Tennis Betting (‘Facilitation’).”

As he is Peru’s Tournament Director and Davies Cup Captain, Horna is considered a covered person and so is expected to comply with rules surrounding relationships with betting operators.

However, it has been reported that Horna in 2023 entered into a contract with a betting operator to provide professional services and promote tennis betting.

This was considered a rule violation by the ITIA and, as such, saw the former tennis player contacted by the independent body.

He was said to have cooperated fully with the investigation and didn’t contest the fine he was given, showing remorse for his actions, underlined by his withdrawal from the arrangement with the operator and the fact he deleted all promotional material related to the brand.

In total, Horna was issued with a six-month suspended ban and fined $10,000, though the suspension will not come into effect unless there is a further breach of the rules during the six-month period.

In other recent legal news, the Danish Gambling Authority has issued SkillOnNet with three orders for anti-money laundering (AML) breaches, and two reprimands for breaches to AML-related rules surrounding whistleblowing and business procedures.
