The European Lotteries (EL) has announced a new initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its members' operations.

This commitment was unveiled during the EL/WLA Sustainability and Responsible Gaming Seminar in Dublin.

Building upon the success of previous projects, EL's latest focus aims to actively decrease greenhouse gas emissions by setting measurable targets and promoting sustainable practices among its members.

This initiative hopes to set a precedent for the broader lottery industry, demonstrating that meaningful environmental change is both achievable and necessary.

Off the back of this commitment, EL has released updated Sustainability Guidelines that are now fully aligned with global sustainability standards.

These guidelines provide EL members with a framework to integrate sustainability into all aspects of their operations, including responsible supply chains, player protection and community engagement.

Commenting on the development, EL President Romana Girandon stated: "The new commitment demonstrates our proactive approach to addressing climate change, while the updated guidelines ensure that EL members remain at the forefront of environmental and social responsibility.”

Earlier this year, European Lotteries also made headlines when it published a manifesto that advocated for stronger EU support.

The Manifesto in question argued for the essential role of lotteries, not merely as games of chance, but as major contributors to the social fabric of Europe.

EL thus called on EU policymakers to safeguard the unique model of national lotteries in order to ensure their continued contribution to public welfare going forward.
