Key points:
- VNLOK and NOGA have launched the ‘Meld Vals Spel’ (Report Cheating Hotline) to combat illegal online gambling practices
- The hotline collects reports to support stricter enforcement and better player protection
- The initiative complements existing regulatory efforts that aim to protect online gambling consumers
VNLOK and NOGA have introduced a new initiative to tackle illegal online gambling through the launch of the ‘Meld Vals Spel’ (Report Cheating Hotline).
This platform enables licensed gambling providers, partner organisations and other professional stakeholders to report unsafe practices linked to illegal gambling sites or apps.
The hotline aims to address the risks posed by unlicensed operators, such as the lack of player protection, the targeting of minors and the offering of excessive bonuses.
By collecting reports, Meld Vals Spel seeks to better understand the methods of illegal operators – ultimately aiding in the development of more effective responses.
The information gathered may also be forwarded to the Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA), policymakers or social media platforms for further action.
This initiative hopes to complement the efforts of the KSA by identifying illegal practices and advocating for stricter enforcement.
Good to know: A recent study by the Quality Mark Responsible Affiliates (QMRA) found that over 270,000 Dutch consumers are directed to illegal gambling websites monthly, underscoring the importance of addressing these practices
Helma Lodders, Chairwoman of VNLOK, and Eric Konings, Acting Director of NOGA, highlighted the ongoing challenge posed by illegal operators, stating: “Many Dutch people still come into contact with illegal gambling sites and apps.
“These illegal parties actively respond to the increasingly strict Dutch regulations by, for example, advertising with search terms such as 'playing without limits'. In doing so, they specifically attract vulnerable players.
“These types of illegal practices endanger the safety of players and must be tackled firmly.”
