Key points:

-YouTube will implement stricter policies on online gambling content, effective 19 March 2025

-Creators will be prohibited from directly linking to gambling sites and may face content removal or age restrictions

-The policy aims to protect viewers, especially younger audiences, from potentially harmful gambling-related content

YouTube has announced updates to its policies on online gambling content, set to take effect on 19 March 2025.

The changes aim to enhance viewer protection, particularly for younger audiences, by imposing stricter regulations on gambling-related content and its promotion.

Under the revised policies, YouTube will prohibit any method of directing viewers to online gambling sites or applications that are not certified by Google. This includes URLs, embedded links, logos, verbal mentions and visual displays.

Additionally, content that promises guaranteed gambling returns may be removed, even if the site being promoted is Google-approved.

While the policy does not outright ban online gambling content, YouTube has introduced age restrictions for certain types of gambling-related material.

Content featuring online casinos and gambling applications – excluding online sports betting and depictions of in-person gambling – will no longer be accessible to users who are signed out or under the age of 18.

Good to know: YouTube has acknowledged that these changes may impact content creators focused on casino gaming and gambling-related applications but emphasises that the measures are necessary to maintain a safe and responsible platform

The announcement aligns with broader efforts by Google to regulate gambling-related content and advertising.

Last month, for example, Google announced updates to its 'Gambling and Games' advertising policy, which will take effect in April.

The revised policy introduces country-specific guidelines and enforces stricter compliance with certification requirements for gambling advertisers.
