Key points:
- John Wright and Darrell Helyar appointed to BetBlocker's Board of Trustees
- Both have previously supported the charity in a volunteer capacity
- The appointments aim to support the charity’s long-term structure and direction
BetBlocker, a UK-based charity focused on responsible gambling, has appointed John Wright and Darrell Helyar to its Board of Trustees.
Both individuals have been involved with the organisation for several years, helping raise awareness of its free-to-use gambling site and app blocking software. The app, which allows users to restrict access to gambling websites and apps, has gained recognition within the gambling industry and among those seeking self-exclusion support.
Wright, who has worked in the iGaming sector for most of his career, said he felt honoured to be asked. He added that more people in the industry should take part in promoting responsible gambling, particularly affiliates. “If the industry knows how to help players, then everyone benefits,” he said.
Helyar brings with him experience in both iGaming and community volunteering. He has received several awards in Canada for his contributions to local initiatives. BetBlocker said his understanding of business operations and team structure has been helpful in shaping the organisation behind the scenes.
Duncan Garvie, Founder of BetBlocker, said both Wright and Helyar had been involved since the early days. Wright, he noted, was the one who first challenged him to create an accessible gambling block tool. He also credited Helyar with helping the team stay focused and effective during a period of growth.
The charity said that adding both to the board would support its plans for the future and ensure its leadership remains grounded in both lived experience and practical knowledge of the gambling sector. Garvie is due to speak at the PlaySponsible Academy event in Vienna on 3 April.
