Key points:
- MGM launches Barra Mart with support from local businesses in the Barra District
- World Book Day event promotes reading culture among employees and the public
- Activities form part of ongoing non-gaming engagement efforts
MGM China has introduced two initiatives in Macau focused on community participation and cultural enrichment.
The first, a pop-up market named Barra Mart, was launched on 19 April and will take place over four consecutive weekends. Located in the historic Barra District, the market features 21 small and medium-sized enterprises offering fresh produce, household goods, crafts and refreshments.
The market is held during daytime hours, complementing the city’s night-time economy and encouraging visitors to explore less frequented areas. Organisers indicated that the initiative supports economic activity while providing a relaxed venue for residents and tourists alike.
Separately, MGM organised a reading event to mark World Book Day, held under the theme “Preserving Chinese Culture, Reading for the Future”. The event took place at MGM Cotai and included book-sharing sessions, cultural discussions, and staff participation in group reading activities.
The programme, supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, brought together representatives from local associations and community institutions. Wendy Yu, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at MGM, noted that the initiative aligns with efforts to promote personal development and cultural literacy among employees.
The reading event is part of a broader campaign launched in 2018 to encourage reading habits within the company. It includes the installation of reading stations in staff areas and collaborative outreach with public libraries.
Both the market and the literacy programme are viewed as contributing to Macau’s wider efforts to diversify its economy and enhance community engagement beyond gaming.
