Key points:
- BetBlocker launches a Serbian-language version of its gambling blocking app, expanding access to support services
- The initiative is supported by Gamblers Connect, which provided pro bono translation services
- The rollout targets improved harm minimisation tools for Serbian speakers, following research on gambling risks in the region
BetBlocker has launched a Serbian-language version of its responsible gambling app, expanding access to its free, anonymous support services to a broader audience across Serbia and the global Serbian-speaking population.
The initiative forms part of the charity’s ongoing strategy to improve language inclusivity in its services, aiming to make gambling self-exclusion tools more accessible to users in their native language.
The launch was facilitated through a partnership with Gamblers Connect, an affiliate website that provided translation services free of charge.
With over 7 million Serbian speakers in Serbia and an estimated 3 million living abroad, the expansion is intended to meet growing demand for native-language support within the gambling harm prevention space.
In 2018, a study published in International Gambling Studies found that 0.5% of survey participants in Serbia met the criteria for problem gambling, with sports betting identified as a key risk area.
Good to know: BetBlocker hopes that this new language rollout will contribute to improved access to self-exclusion tools and increased awareness of safer gambling practices
Gamblers Connect Founder Gjorgje Ristikj said: “I’m glad to see our collaboration with BetBlocker continuing in such a positive and impactful way. Launching the Serbian version is a meaningful step forward and we’re proud to support responsible gambling initiatives that truly make a difference.”
BetBlocker Founder and Trustee Duncan Garvie added: “Obviously, it’s great news for Serbian gamblers that BetBlocker is now available in their language. Serbia doesn’t currently have the range of support options for people looking to stop or manage their gambling, so this is a substantial step forward in terms of harm minimisation.”
The launch follows the March appointment of John Wright and Darrell Helyar to BetBlocker’s Board of Trustees, both of whom have previously worked on expanding the charity’s reach and operational capacity.
