New York sets new online sports betting revenue record in May with $248.9m

Key points:

– Online sports betting GGR in New York reached $248.9m in May, a 0.8% increase from January’s record

– Monthly handle totalled $2.21bn, down 10.8% from January but up 12.1% year-on-year

– GGR rose 22.4% compared to May 2024, which posted $203.3m

New York has reported a new monthly record for online sports betting gross gaming revenue (GGR), with May 2025 figures reaching $248.9m.

The latest data from the New York State Gaming Commission shows this is a 0.8% increase on the state’s previous high of $247m in January 2025.

Despite the record GGR, New York’s May handle fell by 10.8% from January’s $2.48bn to $2.21bn. However, the state saw a 12.1% year-on-year rise in handle from the $1.97bn recorded in May 2024.

The 22.4% increase in GGR from the $203.3m generated in the same month last year suggests a higher win rate for operators.

Net revenue directed to education also saw a significant boost in May. According to the Commission’s monthly wagering report, $126.9m was allocated to the state’s education fund from the total GGR, up 22.4%.

Good to know: Since mobile sports betting launched in January 2022, New York has now generated over $6.5bn in GGR and more than $3.2bn in education-directed revenue

The share for platform providers in May was $122m, nearly $28m higher than the $94.4m reported in April.

This new revenue record follows April’s total GGR of $192.7m, which had been a 4.8% increase year-on-year and came on a 9.6% rise in handle. At that time, FanDuel and DraftKings remained the two dominant market players, contributing the largest share of GGR and handle, respectively.

The latest figures come amid legislative activity surrounding betting limits. In April, lawmakers proposed new restrictions on deposit levels and the use of credit cards in mobile sports betting, although the bill remains under review.
