Key points:
- The Council includes representatives from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on gambling disorder prevention
- The Safe Gambling Program 2026–2030 was also drafted, focusing on prevention and promotion of safe gambling practices
- The Council has three months to submit feedback on the draft before a final version is approved at the next session
The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), under the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, held this morning the inaugural session of the newly renewed Responsible Gambling Advisory Council.
During the meeting, following the completion of the previous council’s mandate last May, the members were renewed.
The meeting was chaired by the Director General for the Regulation of Gambling, Mikel Arana, in his capacity as President of the Council.
The Council seeks to include professionals and representatives from the General State Administration and Autonomous Communities, experts from the scientific, health, and academic fields involved in activities related to gambling disorders, as well as representatives from institutions connected to the gambling sector, as in previous compositions
In addition, the DGOJ presented the draft of the Safe Gambling Program 2026–2030, a strategic document that outlines the policy framework and priorities for the next four years.
Good to know: The DGOJ has recently imposed financial penalties divided among 14 separate gambling operators for illegal wagering activity in Spain.
The draft sets out three core priorities: updated analysis and diagnosis of the current landscape, prevention and promotion of safe gambling practices and participant protection.
It also defines six overarching objectives and twenty-two specific measures designed to foster new lines of collaboration with the Advisory Council.
The newly appointed Council will have a period of three months to provide feedback and recommendations on the draft. The goal is to reach consensus and approve a final version of the program at the Council’s next meeting, which will serve as a roadmap for public policy on safe gambling.
