– The number of players was up 21.6%, with 83.15% being men

– Betting was the most popular form of gaming, followed by casino gaming

The Directorate-General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has released its 2024 executive summary.

According to figures from the Spanish regulator, active players reached just shy of two million, coming to 1,991,550, up 21.6% year-on-year. Of these, men accounted for 83.15%, while women accounted for the other 16.85%, with 85.7% of players being aged 18 – 45.

Average monthly players came to 953,182, with 5.74 months being the average active time for players in Spain. However, it was also found that 21.9% of players remained active for less than a month.

Betting saw the largest number of players with 1,568,197 individuals, up 25.4% year-on-year. Casino players were up 29.2%, while poker was up 13%. In total, 52% of players only played one type of game, with betting and casino being the two most popular.

In terms of player spend, the average player in Spain spent €706 ($810) annually, or €13.57 weekly. This average was calculated with data from a set of online players, as opposed to the general adult population. Men spent more annually on gaming than women, spending €740 compared to €538. Older players, particularly those in the 46 – 55 bracket, spent the most annually at €1,146, while those in the 18 – 25 bracket spent the least at €299.

Good to know: The DGOJ recently presented a draft of its Safe Gambling Program for 2026 – 2030. The council has until August to submit feedback

Finally, 21.3% of players turned a profit from gaming in 2024, with 5% gaining net prizes above €489. Meanwhile, 35% of players reported a net expenditure of over €147.

These results come following gaming revenue figures released in the 2024 State Online Gaming Market, which showed a 17.6% increase in Spanish gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2024, totalling €1.45bn ($1.58bn). Deposits and withdrawals showed a similar trajectory of growth, up 19.6% and 19.7% respectively, while marketing spend increased 30.4% to €526.3m, suggesting that while marketing may have contributed to the 21.6% rise in new players, it was not proportional to the increase in marketing spend.
