PAGCOR orders removal of gambling ads from public spaces
Operators given until 15 August to dismantle all billboards and transit promotions.
Key points:
– All gambling billboards and transport ads must be removed by 15 August
– Only institutional or responsible gaming campaigns will be allowed
– Non-compliance will lead to regulatory consequences
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has announced a nationwide crackdown on gambling-related advertisements, directing all licensees and operators to remove outdoor and transit-based promotions by mid-August.
In a memorandum, the state regulator instructed gaming licensees, suppliers, system administrators and venue operators to dismantle all gambling materials placed on billboards, public transport and similar platforms. This includes ads on trains, buses, jeepneys and taxis.
PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H Tengco said the move is aimed at curbing excessive exposure to gambling promotions and limiting potential harm, particularly to young people. He clarified that only institutional or responsible gaming campaigns will be allowed going forward –and only with prior approval from PAGCOR.
“While we regulate the industry to help generate national revenues, we must also ensure that we do not foster a culture of gambling addiction,” Tengco said in the press release.
Good to know: Licensees must submit a full inventory of current ads by 16 July, detailing location, permit number, material, and contract expiry
The agency is also requiring stakeholders to submit an inventory of all current billboard and wallscape advertisements, including details such as size, materials used, rental contract end dates and Ad Standards Council permit numbers.
Tengco stressed that replacing dismantled materials with new gambling ads will not be tolerated. PAGCOR warned that violations of the directive will result in appropriate enforcement action. The agency considers this a key part of its commitment to responsible gambling and protection of vulnerable communities.
