Philippine gambling operators launch industry alliance to tackle illegal market
They have formed the PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines to strengthen regulatory compliance and protect consumers.
Key Points:
– The PlaySafe Alliance brings together 19 licensed operators to combat illegal gambling
– Core priorities include compliance oversight, improved customer verification and public education campaigns
Nineteen licensed gambling operators in the Philippines have established a collective industry body aimed at promoting regulatory compliance and combating unauthorised gaming activities.
The PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines was officially launched during a signing ceremony in Taguig City, marking a coordinated effort to address sector-wide challenges.
The coalition’s interim leadership includes major market participants such as DigiPlus Interactive Corp., World Platinum Technologies Inc., Trojans Well Entertainment Corp., and Gavin Ventures Inc., among others. The formation coincides with ongoing governmental assessments of the country’s online gambling framework.
Mike Defensor, appointed spokesperson of the industry association and president of World Platinum Technologies Inc., said: “The real enemy in the online gambling issue is the illegal market. No license, no control. Minors can play, no taxes are paid and regulations are ignored. Instead of being protected, the public is put at risk.
“Currently, it is estimated that 70% of the online gambling market is illegal, while only 30% is legal, regulated and paying taxes to the Government. That is why strict regulation and focus on legal operators are essential to ensure safe, responsible and fair play for everyone.”
The newly formed association aims to concentrate on several key initiatives. Cooperation with PAGCOR represents a primary objective, particularly regarding marketing practice oversight and compliance enhancement. The group plans to strengthen customer verification procedures and implement comprehensive age confirmation systems.
The consumer awareness programs have the objective of educating the public about regulated platform benefits while highlighting risks associated with unauthorised gambling sites. The alliance also intends to support research and prevention programs addressing gambling-related harm, including the establishment of a national helpline service.
Good to know: Recently, PAGCOR and the Ad Standards Council (ASC) have signed an agreement to promote responsible advertising practices within the gaming industry
Future governance will involve elected officers and specialized committees focusing on player protection, advertising standards, financial risk management and illegal operator deterrence.
An independent advisory panel featuring local and international experts will guide responsible gaming practices, public health considerations and consumer advocacy matters.
The coalition remains open to additional licensed operators seeking membership, with interested parties directed to contact the interim council.
