Brewing discontent: the Culinary Union bites back at Ron DeSantis
Ted Pappageorge from the Culinary Union of Nevada has reacted angrily to the politician's accusation of mail-in ballot election fraud.
Key points:
– Culinary Union of Nevada has served its response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ claim that it is a perpetrator of election fraud
– DeSantis suggested that the labour association use initimidation tactics to investigate people’s postal votes
– Union Secretary-Treasurer, Pappageorge, has told the Republican politician to “shut his mouth”
Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge has unleashed a sizzling volley of fighting talk in response to claims that the union is involved in bullying and intimidation tactics around mail-in votes.
Donald Trump hosted Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last week and while the meeting was a more cordial affair than their fraught engagement in February, President Trump still found time to digress into domestic matters for a few minutes and spark a fiery national debate.
He told journalists gathered in the Oval Office that an executive order is being drawn up to outlaw the practice, saying that while the system remains in place, “you will never have an honest election.”
The unlikeliest and unhappiest participant in the ensuing national conversation is the Culinary Union of Nevada, members of which are employed keeping the tables laden and drinks topped up across the casinos of Las Vegas.
It is the largest union in the State of Nevada, and it is certainly the most cross after Ron de Santis suggested it was a noted perpetrator of election fraud.
Good to know: DeSantis was for a time a front runner for the Republican candidacy and has been characterised as ‘Diet Trump’ or ‘Trump without the baggage’ – he dropped out of the race and backed the current President when it became clear he could not compete with Trump’s popularity
In a speech, the MAGA lieutenant stirred the pot, saying: “You think the Culinary Union is just going to let you kind of vote your conscience without trying to… no, they’re going to want to see those votes. They’re going to want to bring the votes in.”
This clearly left a bitter taste in the mouth of the union which has poured cold water on the allegation, saying: “It’s typical of Governor Ron DeSantis to bully cooks, housekeepers and food servers. He’s about as anti-union as they come.”
DeSantis may want to bring a packed lunch next time he visits Las Vegas, with the enraged labour association warning him to “shut his mouth” and worry about issues within his own state.
Pappageorge’s statement makes reference to the spiralling cost of eggs, beef and rent in Florida.
The Republican politician has indeed tussled with unions back in his own jurisdiction, signing off on a bill two years ago that significantly increase restrictions on public-employee union members.
He has also been an important supporter of the Seminole Tribe in the Sunshine State to uphold its exclusive right to run online sports betting and other forms of gambling in the state.
