Norsk Tipping faces potential NOK 10m fine over Eurojackpot notification error

The incident occurred when a formula used to convert prizes from Euro cents to Norwegian kroner incorrectly multiplied amounts by 100 instead of dividing by 100, resulting in prize notifications that were 10,000 times the actual amounts.

Norsk Tipping faces potential NOK 10m fine over Eurojackpot notification error

Key points:

– Norsk Tipping notified 47,000 players of inflated Eurojackpot winnings in June due to a conversion error

– The Lottery Authority has issued a notice of a potential NOK 10m fine, equal to 0.1% of turnover

– A full review of Norsk Tipping’s lottery operations is now underway following repeated system failures

Norsk Tipping has been issued a notice of violation and faces a potential fine of up to NOK 10m following a major error in its Eurojackpot system earlier this summer.

On 27 June, around 47,000 players were incorrectly notified that they had won excessively large prizes due to a calculation error. Of these, 30,000 received alerts directly via SMS or push notifications.

The Norwegian Lottery Authority described the incident as a “serious breach of trust,” stressing that gambling operators are legally obliged to run games in a fair and transparent manner.

The error was traced to a faulty formula that converted Euro cents into Norwegian kroner, multiplying amounts by 100 rather than dividing.

While the draw itself was carried out correctly and the mistake was quickly corrected, officials criticised Norsk Tipping for failing to identify the issue during testing or internal controls.

Good to know: The company has three weeks to respond to the notice before a final decision is made

This latest incident adds to a series of compliance challenges for the state-owned operator.

Recent cases include a NOK 25m erroneous casino payout, technical issues preventing iPhone and iPad users from logging out of games for months and long-standing lottery draw errors that distorted winning odds for cooperative players over several years.

In light of repeated failures, the Lottery Authority has announced an extensive inspection covering Lotto, Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto.
