ACMA warns four operators for breaching Australia’s gambling laws

Key points

– The warnings target Spinit, Lucky Ones7, The Pokies and Slot Lounge for operating without licences in Australia.

– ACMA said continued non-compliance could lead to further measures, including requesting internet service providers to block access to the offending sites

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued formal warnings to four companies for providing unlicensed online gambling services in breach of national regulations.

The warnings were directed at Stellar Ltd, operator of Spinit; Just Entertainment B.V., operator of Lucky Ones7; Digibrite S.R.L., operator of The Pokies; and Hollycorn N.V., operator of Slot Lounge.

According to the ACMA, these entities offered gambling services to Australian consumers without the required licences. It emphasised that such operations undermine the regulated market and fail to provide the consumer protections required under Australian law.

The Authority reiterated that the provision of unlicensed gambling services is a serious violation. It also warned that failure to comply with Australian legislation may result in further enforcement actions, including requesting that internet service providers block access to offending websites.

In August, Stellar Ltd was warned by the ACMA because of the provision of unlicensed online casino services through the Spinit platform, highlighting the regulator’s ongoing scrutiny of repeat non-compliance.

Good to know: The ACMA has published its fourth report on the Disinformation and Misinformation Code, describing the measures taken by signatories within the voluntary framework

Besides, the regulator highlighted its broader compliance strategy, which includes monitoring illegal platforms, issuing warnings and coordinating with internet and payment providers to restrict non-compliant operators.

According to the ACMA, since 2017 it has taken consistent steps against offshore operators targeting Australian consumers. The four warnings issued today add to an expanding list of enforcement actions aimed at deterring unlicensed activity.
