Swiss online casinos facing payment issues

Switzerland’s online casino market is experiencing difficulties with payment processing. Seven licenses have been issued, but not all permitted casinos are open to customers.

Two of the country-regulated and locally licensed casinos, Jackpots.ch and Casino777.ch, discovered that accounts that were topped-up using PostFinance had a significantly low personal account balance. In some cases, lost sums would amount to thousands of francs. Over 1,000 customers have been affected.

PostFinance, a financial service under SwissPost, was considered to be a suitable option for casino gaming because accounts can’t be overdrawn. However, due to system error, PostFinance allowed users to deposit money into the casinos without reflecting the change in the account’s balance. The issue lasted for more than a month and was finally fixed on 8 June, with readjustments of accounts. This left some accounts overdrawn, resulting in locked balance.

The casinos in question are operated by Stadtcasino Baden Group and were among the first to launch in the country’s newly regulated online gambling market.

The group’s CEO Detlef Brose announced the company “will reimburse all game losses that are related to subsequent bookings that were made more than 30 days ago”. The financial service, however, is only offering the payment plan for users with a negative balance.
