Nevada gaming wins surpass $1bn mark in May

Casino winnings in Nevada jumped above the $1bn mark in May,  a rise of 9.4% from April and almost 5.3% more than winnings reported in May 2017.

“This amounts to a 5.29% increase compared to May 2017, when licensees reported a gaming win of $991,594,550,” the Nevada Gaming Control Board said.

The news was welcomed by operators as Nevada casinos earned $954m in April, the first dip blow the $1bn mark since January.

Slot machine revenue increased 7.1% in May to $670.2m, with table games jumping 14.5% to $373.9m. Baccarat accounted for $120.8m of the table games wins.

The two highest earning areas in Nevada were in Clark County, with $904m in winnings, followed by Washoe County with $73m.

The increase in May 2018 revenue could be linked to a higher volume of visitors. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, 3.6m people visited Las Vegas in May, a slight increase from the 3.5m visitors in April. The visitor volumes for May 2018 also show an increase of 0.8% over May 2017, indicating more people are visiting Las Vegas.

In the period between 1 June 1 2017 and 31 May 2018,  statewide gaming revenue rose 3% compared to the same period in the previous year.
