Arizona sportsbooks debut with $291.2m September handle

The state’s online and retail sportsbooks saw $291.2m in wagers for September, according to data released by the Arizona Department of Gaming. The previous best for a market’s first calendar month was $131.4m, set by Tennessee in November 2020.

Arizona generated $32.3m in gross gaming revenue from 9 September until the end of the month, which is also the most in history for a state in its first month of legal sports betting.

Net revenue was $31.6m; after $31.2m in promotional credits, the state taxed $392,418 in gross event wagering receipts, producing $31,293 in fees for the state.

Online sports betting produced 99% of the state’s total handle, with retail sportsbooks accepting $2.6m in wagers. The sportsbook debutants included: FanDuel, DraftKings, Barstool, BetMGM, Caesars, TwinSpires, Unibet and WynnBet.

DraftKings led the market with $97.7m in wagers and FanDuel followed with $57.7m.

C. J. Pierre, Lead Analyst for PlayAZ, commented: “Arizona has enormous potential as a market, but it is encouraging for the industry to see such a strong debut. Setting a record in the first month would qualify as getting the market off on the right foot.

“The next question is how quickly the state can ramp up and compete with more established markets. It appears that won’t take long.”
