Thailand to begin discussions over the legalisation of online gambling

Thailand is set to begin talks surrounding the potential legalisation of online gambling in the country. 

This is according to reports from the region, which state that Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong has explained that the Government is set to begin initial discussions into legalising online gambling. 

Alongside these discussions into the matter, an official study into online gambling is set to be completed over the coming months, with Prasert urging government agencies to start working together surrounding discussions and efforts into online gambling.

Much of the reason behind this push for online gambling is due to the benefits it would bring for the economy in Thailand, but also in terms of what legalising it would do to help prevent illegal online gambling which has caused problems such as criminal behaviour.

While it is early in discussions on the matter, Prasert said there hadn’t been talks yet on what the age limit would be for online gambling. 

This news comes after in August, Thailand released the Casino Bill draft related to the legalisation of land-based casinos in the country. 

In other news from Asia, data has suggested that Japan is experiencing a significant rise in gambling addiction cases linked to online casinos, with consultation requests increasing 11-fold over the past five years.
