As betting activity reaches record levels for the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network (OGTN) is preparing for an expected increase in calls from those struggling with gambling-related issues.

March is recognised as Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and experts are highlighting the risks associated with the tournament’s fast-paced and widespread betting opportunities.

According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), legal bets on March Madness are projected to exceed $3bn nationwide, doubling the amount wagered on the Super Bowl.

Commenting on the risks that the tournament poses, Derek Longmeier, Executive Director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, stated: “March Madness can be a perfect storm for those who don’t set limits and stick to them.

“There are multiple games and live betting options available on multiple betting sites all happening at once. It’s easy for fun to spiral into crisis.”

The Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network is urging individuals who suspect they may have a gambling problem to seek help early.

Good to know: Recent data suggests that nearly one in five Ohio adults – approximately 1.8 million people – are at risk for problem gambling, with more than 250,000 estimated to have a gambling disorder

Ohio is one of the few states to offer a “Warm Transfer” helpline, which provides direct access to support services, including counselling, group therapy and financial management assistance.

The “Pause Before You Play” initiative also encourages individuals to set betting limits to reduce risk.
