Chandigarh Police dismantle IPL betting syndicate

Key points:

– Betting was operated from a rented house in Chandigarh

– Over 40 mobile phones and other electronic devices seized

– Cash-based transactions tied to T20 IPL fixtures, police say

As reported by The Print, Chandigarh Police have arrested four individuals for allegedly running a large-scale cricket betting operation during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The arrests were made during a raid on a residential property in Sector 33 on 26 May, timed with the T20 match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians in Jaipur.

Described as a “pan-India” network by police, the syndicate had been accepting bets offline, with payments made in cash via local bookies. During the raid, police recovered 43 mobile phones, six laptops, two tablets, an LED screen, WiFi routers and other betting-related equipment.

Good to know: Investigators believe some members of the operation are based in Dubai, suggesting the betting ring may have international links.

The operation came to light following a tip-off received by the Operations Cell. Officers developed leads and mounted surveillance before executing the raid. The house used as the betting base was rented, police confirmed.

According to preliminary findings, the racket was accepting bets worth several lakh rupees (approximately $3,500–$12,000). Authorities are now following up on digital trails and financial records to uncover the full scope of the syndicate’s activities.

A formal case has been registered and investigations are ongoing, with police indicating that additional arrests and cross-border cooperation may follow. The crackdown is part of broader efforts to address illegal sports betting in the region, which typically spikes during high-profile tournaments like the IPL.
