A 23-year-old Sydney man is due to appear in Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday following his arrest in connection with an alleged AU$2m online gambling scam that police say defrauded over a dozen victims.

As reported by news.com.au, New South Wales Police began investigating in August 2023 after receiving multiple reports relating to a suspicious online gambling operation. Authorities believe at least 14 individuals were lured into what was presented as a legitimate betting platform, ultimately losing significant sums of money.

The accused, who voluntarily attended Bankstown Police Station on Tuesday, has been charged with 14 offences, including dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception, producing false documents for gain and demanding with menaces.

Good to know: Online betting scams are a growing concern across Australia, with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) warning of increasing incidents where fake gambling platforms are used to exploit victims under the promise of fast profits

Authorities are continuing to investigate whether others may have been affected by the alleged scam or were involved in facilitating the operation. 

The man remains in custody and will face a magistrate to respond to the charges.
