CityU opens five innovation labs with HKJC’s HK$48.76m support
New research facilities to focus on smart cities, green energy and biotech.

As reported by Oriental Daily News, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has established five pioneering innovation laboratories, thanks to a HK$48.76m contribution from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
These Jockey Club Innovation Laboratories span five distinct research areas: circular bioeconomy, electrocatalysis and electrosynthesis, energy and materials physics, thermal-fluids science and smart cities.
According to CityU’s Provost and Deputy President, Professor Raymond Chan, each lab is designed to make a lasting impact through scientific advancement, aiming to serve not only Hong Kong but also the broader region.
Among them, the Smart City Lab, led by Professor Fang Yuk-kwong from the Department of Computer Science, will investigate areas such as autonomous and connected vehicles, smart traffic control, public safety, health monitoring systems and smart healthcare.
Meanwhile, the Circular Bioeconomy Lab, under the leadership of Professor To Chung Lee from Mechanical Engineering, will work on developing core processes and academic frameworks to foster industrial collaboration and establish Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area as leaders in sustainable bioeconomic practices.

Ms Elsie Tsang, Executive Manager (Talent and Sector Development) at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, said the labs will boost applied research capacity while nurturing local innovation talent.
She added that the Trust hopes to strengthen industry collaboration and address pressing societal needs through this investment.
