The investigation involves 25 public figures accused of promoting betting platforms on social media.
Key points:
– Google representatives were questioned by India’s Enforcement Directorate
– The questioning is related to a money laundering investigation
– The case involves the promotion of illegal betting and gambling platforms
Actor Prakash Raj appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Hyderabad on Wednesday for questioning in connection with a case involving the promotion of online betting applications.
The actor arrived at the ED office in Basheerbagh, where he briefly acknowledged media personnel before proceeding inside.
The investigation stems from a First Information Report (FIR) filed in March by Telangana police against 25 public figures, including actors Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, Manchu Lakshmi and social media influencers. The individuals face allegations of promoting gambling and betting applications through their social media platforms.
The complaint was filed by businessman PM Phanindra Sarma at Miyapur Police Station in Hyderabad. Sarma stated that conversations with young people in his community revealed their attraction to gambling applications following celebrity endorsements online.
According to the claim, Sarma himself considered investing in one such platform but reconsidered after family discussions, subsequently recognizing the potential risks and deciding to file the complaint.
The FIR alleges that the celebrities received payments for advertising betting platforms that promise returns but frequently result in financial losses for users. The complaint identifies particular concern for lower and middle-income families, who may be more susceptible to such marketing.
