MGA issues warning against unauthorised gaming URLs

Key points:

– MGA warns that certain unauthorised websites are falsely claiming to hold Maltese licences

– Regulator urges players to verify operators against its official licensed entities list

– Notice follows increased enforcement and regulatory cooperation by the MGA

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has issued a public warning regarding two unauthorised websites falsely claiming association with the Maltese regulator.

The notice specifically identifies URLs that have been misrepresenting their licensing status and regulatory approval. The MGA has declared no connection with the identified websites.

Both sites allegedly reference MGA licensing and authorisation in misleading ways, potentially deceiving consumers about their regulatory status.

MGA maintains that only properly licensed entities are required to comply with Malta’s regulatory framework, which includes consumer protection measures, anti-money laundering protocols and responsible gaming safeguards.

As such, MGA emphasised that consumers should verify any gaming operator’s authorisation status before engaging with their services.

The regulator also noted that transactions with unlicensed operators can expose consumers to various financial and security risks.

Good to know: The authority maintains a list of all licensed entities on its official website, allowing consumers to verify legitimate operators before participating in online gaming activities

This announcement comes amid ongoing regulatory developments for the MGA, including recent bilateral cooperation agreements with the Malta Financial Services Authority and the publication of its 2024 annual report showing €84.1m ($98.5m) in revenue.

The regulator issued 17 new licences during 2024 while imposing 25 administrative fines.
