Bookmakers used cleaner to aid IPL betting scandal

Indian authorities have found that an employed cleaner for an IPL match was being used to help an illegal betting operation.

The cleaner was observed at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla ground and authorities found the individual was pitch-siding, which is known to help ball-by-ball betting.

Pitch siding is the act of transmitting information from sporting events to individuals that are gambling or placing bets.

During one of the IPL games in New Delhi, the designated cleaner was using the time lag between the actual match and live TV coverage to help ball-by-ball betting.

BCCI ACU chief, Shabbir Hussain Shekhadam Khandwawala told the press trust of India that one of his Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officers caught a cleaner and gave their details to the Delhi Police.

While the individual ran away, they left behind two mobile phones, which allowed the ACU to lodge a complaint with the Delhi Police over suspicion of pitch-siding.

Meanwhile, the Delhi police managed to arrest two other people from the Feroz Shah Kotla ground due to an ACU tip off.

The police found fake accreditation cards on the two people they arrested during the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and SunRisers Hyderabad on 2nd May.

Hussain added: “So on two separate days, these people managed to get access to Kotla.

“The one who fled came in the garb of a cleaner. However, we have all his details as he was employed for the tournament. His Aadhar Card details have been handed over to Delhi Police.”
