Richard Bredice, Burnley FC’s lead first-team performance analyst, has been sanctioned by the Football Association (FA) for misconduct related to betting.

Bredice has been fined £4,500 ($5,742) and suspended from all football-related activities for 12 months after admitting to breaching FA Rule E1.2.

The breach involved placing 456 bets on football matches or other matters related to football between 1 November 2014 and 13 December 2022.

The suspension is divided into two parts: Six months are effective immediately, while the remaining six months are suspended until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

This staggered approach to the suspension allows for part of the punishment to be delayed.

The FA's independent Regulatory Commission provided written reasons for their decision, detailing the extent of Bredice’s betting activities and the rationale behind the imposed sanctions. The document is publicly available for those seeking further insights into the case.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges football authorities face in regulating betting activities among those involved in the sport and represents the most recent in a series of football-related bans.

Last year, for example, Newcastle footballer Sandro Tonali received an 18-month sanction from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following an investigation into a ‘betting probe’.

Additionally, a request from the FIGC to FIFA to have this ban implemented globally was granted and has seen Tonali unable to play in a number of key events.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was also banned for eight months last year following similar betting breaches.
