When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Macau’s job market in recent years, major gaming corporations of Macau’s gaming and gambling sector became important employers of people with disabilities.

This is according to the National Director of Macau Special Olympics Hetzer Siu, as quoted by Macau news media.

“I believe gaming corporations play a significant role in this context. It is evident that more individuals with disabilities are being employed by these companies, reflecting a commendable commitment to hiring a substantial number of people with disabilities,” Siu said.

“You can see more disabled people hired by gaming corporations, not in casinos but in other roles.”

However, despite the positive outlook, Siu also acknowledged that there were still uncertainties. The Macau Special Olympics has placed over 10 individuals with intellectual disabilities in corporate roles this year, but the long-term retention rate is unclear, as new hires sometimes leave their positions just after a few months.

“We hope in the future we have more support to get people with intellectual disabilities into the career path to get their job,” Siu concluded.

Sands China has been one of the supporters of this cause, providing funding for health advocacy and community programs while working with the organisation.

Recently, Macau’s Labour Affairs Bureau has announced plans to host job matchmaking sessions for its gaming operators in September, with about 1,838 job vacancies offered.

Lawmakers in Macau were also advocating for protecting the welfare of gaming-sector employees post-pandemic.
