PFA Northern Ireland enters RG partnership with Gamban

Key points:

– PFA Northern Ireland has partnered with Gamban

– The Association has enlisted the provider’s RG services to help protect its player members from gambling harms

The Professional Footballers’ Association of Northern Ireland (PFA NI) has unveiled a new partnership with gambling blocking software provider Gamban.

This collaboration seeks to enable the association’s members to access problem gambling support tools, provided by Gamban, as the organisation looks to combat gambling-related harms within its community. More specifically, Gamban’s technology allows for the blocking of access to gambling websites and apps, and will now be utilised to help protect players in Northern Ireland from gambling addiction and related issues.

Speaking on the arrangement, PFA NI CEO Michael Carvill said: “As the representative body for professional footballers in Northern Ireland, we are committed to supporting our members both on and off the pitch. Gambling addiction is a growing concern within football and this partnership with Gamban is a significant step in providing practical help to those who need it.”

Building on this was Melissa Etherington, Partnerships Executive at Gamban, who stated: “Gambling addiction is a growing issue in football, which impacts mental health, finances and a player’s performance on the pitch. It also has the potential to impact sports integrity. We are delighted to partner with PFA NI to raise awareness of Gamban among those most at risk from harms related to online gambling.”

Good to know: During Q4 2024, multiple requests from Northern Irish political institutions called for enhanced gambling advertising restrictions in the region

Subsequently, Northern Ireland officially updated its gambling regulations to closer align them with legislation enforced in Great Britain to address these concerns.

For Gamban, this latest deal follows the announcement of an additional partnership which saw the Dutch regulator, KSA, provide funds for a one-year pilot of the providers services in the nation’s market.

Earlier this year, Gamban also obtained platinum accreditation from Investors in People after its services were rolled out in Ohio towards the end of 2023.
