Denmark: GGR up 5.6% to DKK 11bn for 2024

It’s the time of year again, when Spillemyndigheden compiles all of its figures from the previous financial year.

Denmark: GGR up 5.6% to DKK 11bn for 2024

Key points:

– The Danish Gambling Authority noted that GGR increased by 5.6% annually to DKK 11bn

– Lotteries contributed the most towards the overall GGR, while online gambling accounted for 68%

– The total number of people registered on ROFUS at the end of 2024 was 55,899

Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, has published its Gambling Market in Numbers 2024 report.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for 2024 was DKK 11bn (US$1.68bn), which represented a 5.6% increase when compared to the year prior.

This is the third-highest figure in over 12 years and is only beaten by DKK 11.4bn and DKK 11.3bn in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Lotteries contributed the most towards the GGR, bringing in DKK 3.7bn, which translates to 34% of the overall totals.

Online casino GGR was a close second with DKK 3.5bn or 32%, while betting brought in DKK 2.2bn or 20%.

Gaming machines accounted for DKK 1.16bn or 11%, while land-based betting brought up the rear with DKK 368m or 3%.

Overall, online gambling contributed 68% of the total GGR, while land-based gambling has continued to decrease.

In 2024, GGR accounted for 0.37% of the Danish gross domestic product (GDP), which is the second-lowest figure behind 2022’s figure of 0.36% – many other years had it had somewhere around 0.42%.

The average gambling spend per Dane was DKK 2,280, which is a 4.8% increase year-on-year. When compared to the average spend in 2012, this marks an increase of 10.3%.

Last year, 967 companies had licences to offer gambling in Denmark. While four operators have a monopoly on lotteries, this doesn’t apply to charity lotteries, of which 1,580 were held in 2024.

During the European Championships held in the summer of 2024, the Authority noted that the highest spikes in betting aligned with the days when the Danish men’s football team were playing.

The highest figures were from 16 June, during Denmark’s first group stage match against Slovenia, with stakes reaching around DKK 120m.

Speaking of European countries, Denmark ranked 12th when looking at gambling spend per capita.

Denmark (DKK 2,425) was sat between neighbours Norway (DKK 2,348) and Sweden (DKK 2,718), while Cyprus (DKK 4,050) and Iceland (DKK 3,768) dominated first and second place.

However, if including spending from unlicensed online casinos, Denmark would be 4th in the leaderboards for online spending.

When looking at the share of gambling coming from online, Denmark (70%) now comes behind neighbours Norway (75%) and Sweden (76%).

Despite this amount including potentially unlicensed online casinos, the channelisation rate in Denmark is at its highest ever figure of 91.5% – which also places it in fourth when compared to other EU countries.

Good to know: Before the liberalisation of betting and online casinos in 2012, Denmark’s channelisation rates were around 39% – This jumped to 68.6% post-liberalisation and has continued to grow since

The Danish Register of Self-Excluded Players (ROFUS) recorded 55,899 people at the end of 2024, which is an increase of almost 10,000 compared to the year before.

On 1 January 2025, 78% of individuals recorded on ROFUS were men, while 118 people minors were also registered.

As for the StopSpillet helpline, there were 544 inquiries with 57% of these coming from the players, 39% from relatives and 4% from professionals.
