Tim Miller addressed the association by delivering a speech at its AGM.
Key points:
– UKGC Executive Director Tim Miller addressed the Bingo Association at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM)
– Miller’s speech drew on subjects such as regulatory compliance and technical standards within UK bingo
Tim Miller, Executive Director of the UK’s Gambling Commission, delivered a speech at the Bingo Association’s AGM, praising the organisation for its “practical and constructive” approaches.
Miller covered a range of topics as part of his address, specifying that the commission has been pleased with the Bingo Association’s approach to data and evidence, responsible gambling and its frictionless integration with the implementation of the Gambling Act Review. Elsewhere, he discussed the recent extension of the ongoing consultation on gaming machines, which investigates their technical standards pertaining to testing strategy – stating that despite the extension the commission is committed to securing the right outcome.
His closing remarks further reiterated the commission’s focus on strengthening the Gambling Survey for Great Britain data – alongside the development and maintenance of a safely and effectively regulated bingo landscape in the UK market.
Pertaining to this subject, Miller said: “Another area we are keen to deliver better outcomes through working with you is in tackling illegal bingo. We engage with the Bingo Association regularly and recently you have shared through the team at the Association that you are becoming increasingly concerned about bingo offered without a licence. Bingo does not appear to follow the rules for relevant exemptions either.
“Keeping crime out of gambling is of course one of our licensing objectives and as with the others, something we take very seriously. And I can tell you today, where we have sufficient evidence of this, we will always look to take action. The problem we have at the Commission though is the level of reports we have received does not always appear to match the level of concern expressed.”
Good to know: The Gambling Commission’s consultation on gaming machine standards was launched in January 2025
More recently, in April, the commission entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) as part of a new arrangement that has seen the pair formalise their ongoing collaborative relationship.
Also last month, the Gambling Commission charged 15 individuals for their respective involvement in the UK’s general election betting scandal last summer.
