ANJ relaunches sports betting prevention campaign for Roland Garros
Originally introduced during Euro 2024, the initiative aims to highlight the dangers associated with problem gambling by elevating the visibility of legal disclaimers.
Key points:
– ANJ relaunched its “Behind the Labels” campaign for Roland Garros, emphasising legal warning notices in sports betting advertisements through enlarged visual displays and real addiction stories
– Sports betting is linked to the highest rate of excessive gambling in France, according to 2024 data
– The campaign directs users to Evalujeu website for gambling habit assessments and support resources
France’s National Gaming Authority (ANJ) has relaunched its “Behind the Labels” prevention campaign ahead of Roland Garros, targeting addiction risks associated with sports betting by emphasising legal notices typically overlooked in gambling advertisements.
The campaign launch coincides with statistics from the French Observatory of Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT), which estimates 1.17 million problem gamblers in France during 2024, including 360,000 classified as excessive gamblers.
Sports betting presents the highest individual risk for problem gambling, with excessive gambling rates six times higher than lottery games at 5.9%.
The “Behind the Labels” initiative, originally launched during the June 2024 Euros, uses deliberate visual disproportion to highlight mandatory warning messages.
The campaign features enlarged yellow banners containing legal notices alongside real addiction stories, aiming to make regulatory warnings more prominent and impactful than traditional placement at the bottom of adverts.
The campaign’s signature states: “Two lines at the bottom of an ad will never be enough to tell the story of the spiral of sports betting addiction.”
Campaign materials direct users to the Evalujeu website, which provides gambling habit assessments and tailored advice for maintaining control. The platform also offers information about available support systems for players and their families.
The prevention effort aligns with ANJ’s 2024-2026 strategic plan, which prioritises drastically reducing excessive gambling rates within three years.
