– The move will see Novomatic expanding into the French market

Novomatic has acquired French Vikings Casinos group as part of its French expansion efforts.

The acquisition, which was approved by state authorities, will allow Novomatic to continue its goals for sustainable growth and international diversification. By acquiring French Vikings Casinos, it will be able to expand its offering using French Vikings Casinos’ assets, which currently include over 300 employees and 1,000 gaming terminals in 10 live casinos, with many situated along the Côte d’Azur.

On the acquisition, Novomatic Executive Board Member Stefan Krenn said: “The acquisition of Vikings Casinos is a key part of our efforts to build up Novomatic’s presence on international markets in a targeted manner. France is one of the most dynamic and most challenging gaming markets in Europe. By making this investment, we are not only reinforcing our leading position in Europe but also demonstrating our clear commitment to our long-term global expansion strategy.”

Indeed, France has seen several market developments as of late. In October, it was revealed that online casino gaming was set to be legalised in the nation, albeit with a 55.6% tax rate. The French gaming regulator, Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), also released its plans for tackling excess gambling in April, after it was found that there were around 1.2 million problem gamblers in France.

But, the market is lucrative. As seen in the ANJ’s 2024 report, the market generated €14bn ($15bn) in revenue for 2024, up 4.7% year-on-year. Of this, €2.6bn was made from online gaming, with online sports betting up 19%.
