Allwyn UK’s national lottery upgraded with Scientific Games’ Momentum system

Key points:

– The technology conversion replaced The National Lottery’s 2009 system, migrating millions of transactions and 43,500 retailer records

– The upgrade supports nationwide sales, funding for Good Causes and includes further planned enhancements to digital channels

Scientific Games’ Momentum ecosystem announced that is now supporting Allwyn UK’s updated National Lottery operations and 43,500 retailers nationwide, following what the companies describe as the largest technology conversion in the global lottery industry.

The Momentum ecosystem, anchored by Scientific Games’ central lottery gaming system, includes the WAVE family of retail point-of-sale terminals being deployed across the UK, as well as a range of enterprise applications such as the Gem suite for Salesforce, claims and licensing.

Momentum currently powers lottery operations in North America, Europe and Oceania.

Patrick McHugh, CEO of Scientific Games, said, “We continue to be impressed with the smooth execution of this large-scale, collaborative project with Allwyn UK, the operator of The National Lottery under the fourth license.

“A network of more than 43,000 terminals was switched from the legacy system to the new Scientific Games systems, with retailers nationally selling two hours ahead of the planned cut-over schedule. Our global technology teams are inspired as we have a number of systems conversions actively underway.”

The UK project replaced The National Lottery’s 2009 central gaming system, integrated multiple supplier systems, and converted 43,500 retailer terminals to the new software prior to the full rollout of WAVE terminals.

The conversion involved migrating retailer records and millions of transactions to the new system. Following the switch, most retailers resumed ticket sales promptly, with any remaining technical issues handled remotely or on-site.

As part of Allwyn UK’s strategy for a modernized National Lottery, the Momentum ecosystem supports nationwide sales and the generation of funds for Good Causes. The project follows Scientific Games’ contract signing in November 2023 to provide technology and operational support for the Lottery.

Allwyn CEO Andria Vidler said, “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver The National Lottery that the UK deserves. We’ve made unprecedented and much-needed changes, which are moving us closer to achieving our vision for The National Lottery, restoring its magic and significantly increasing its positive impact on lives across the UK.

“These major upgrades will allow us to deliver on our promise to bring new, exciting games; a better player experience; and our commitment to double returns to Good Causes from £30m to £60m every week by the end of the 10-year license.”
