Thai Buddhist council reaffirms ban on monks predicting lottery numbers
Monastic discipline under scrutiny following rise in fortune-telling cases.
Key points:
– Sangha Council reiterates 1955 ban on gambling-related acts
– Monks warned against promoting superstition
– Breaches may lead to defrocking or disciplinary action
Thailand’s Sangha Supreme Council has reminded monks across the country that acting as fortune tellers, particularly in relation to lottery numbers, is a violation of religious discipline and national law.
As reported by The Thaiger, the move follows renewed concern over misconduct among the clergy, with senior monks allegedly participating in superstitious or gambling-related activities.
The council said such behaviour undermines public trust and misrepresents Buddhist teachings. “Monks must not position themselves as mystical figures,” a spokesperson said. “Encouraging gambling through lucky numbers only leads society away from Dharma.”
The long-standing regulation prohibits monks and novices from predicting lottery outcomes or engaging in behaviour that promotes gambling. Violations may result in disciplinary penalties, including defrocking.
The latest reminder comes amid a broader effort to address misconduct in the monkhood. Reports of monks involved in romantic relationships, financial scandals and unregistered business ventures have sparked public backlash in recent years.
Good to know: The original ban dates back to 1955, though similar restrictions were recorded as early as 1860 under King Rama IV’s royal decree
Despite repeated warnings, some monks continue to attract followers by offering supernatural claims, with social media amplifying their reach. The Sangha Council stated that such practices distort Buddhist values and risk drawing people into financial harm.
“The monastic path requires focus on meditation, discipline and community service,” the council added. “Those who fail to uphold these principles will face consequences in accordance with religious law.”
