Shakyra Jonsson, Senior Affiliate Operations Manager, Betsson Group Affiliates, speaks to Louis Thompsett

What is the best thing about working for Betsson? What gets you excited about going to work in the morning?

I have been with Betsson Group since 2012 – that’s nearly 11 years now! This was my first iGaming experience and I think this has helped me expand much of my present work ethics and portfolio. Being given the opportunity to move within the group was a great achievement – surely I will never regret this move. Currently I manage a team within the affiliate department and I enjoy going in to work in the morning because I enjoy what I do! What gets me excited the most? Believe it or not – it’s meeting my colleagues and sharing experiences, both personally and professionally every instance of the day... it’s a daily recurrent experience that changes and I simply love it!

If there was anyone in the industry in particular you’d want to work with, aside from someone at Betsson, who would it be and why?

If I could, I would love to work with some ex-colleagues of mine from whom I have learnt a lot . With these people, I grew up fast as a professional leader and it was thanks to them. I wouldn’t mention anyone in particular, just not to leave anyone out, but yes, an ex-colleague of mine who led the marketing department pushed me up to another level. He had charisma, enthusiasm and was a true leader. I salute you, my friend!

If there was anything you could go back and change in your professional career, what would it be and why?

Following my graduation in Italy, I always had this burning passion for marketing. My first working experience was handling PR for a local firm. Yes, it was a great start and I can’t say I didn’t learn from that time. Following this, I moved on to an agency, which I wasn’t too keen on and perhaps this would be the one I would go back in time and omit from my list. But this is how you learn and get to know how to choose your jobs. If I was not enjoying my day-to-day job, that would make me look out for other opportunities and that is when my doors opened at Betsson Group.

What is your dream for the future of Betsson – how would you like to see it evolve in the coming years?

This year, Betsson Group is celebrating a major milestone: its 60th anniversary! Founded in 1963, the group has come a long way in the past six decades and is now acknowledged as one of the leading names in the industry. Betsson Group’s 60th anniversary is a testament to the company’s success and commitment to excellence. In the future, we will remain dedicated to providing the best possible gaming experience both to our customers through our several brands, but also to other operators through our B2B operations. Betsson Group is truly well positioned to be leading the way in the online gaming industry – all thanks to its talented and passionate Betssonites!

What is your biggest achievement to date?

My biggest achievement in life by far is that of becoming a mother. Life would now not be what it is without fulfilling a family dream! Assuming the role of a mother is an accomplishment because, unfortunately, not all women can be mums and I feel I have changed personally. Being a parent is a 24/7 job – no one can deny that. But again, it can change you in so many ways. It can make you stronger on so many levels. But I am so proud of being a mum blessed with an awesome loving son.

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Eggs come from chickens and chickens come from eggs: that’s the basis of this ancient riddle! Eggs are much older than chickens! Dinosaurs laid eggs; the fish that first crawled out of the sea laid eggs and the weird articulated monsters that swam in the warm shallow seas of the Cambrian period 500 million years ago also laid eggs! They weren’t chicken’s eggs, but they were still eggs. So, the egg definitely came first...

I hear you’re a Chelsea fan, so am I ! What do you make of Graham Potter’s management so far, and the Todd Boehly era?

That’s great to hear Blues fans are still around following this season. I have supported Chelsea from a very young age, since I was a 5-year-old. I have been surrounded by family football fans, starting off from my grandfather, grandmother and eventually my dad, a loyal Chelsea fan for 53 years! My blood has always been blue, so I had to support CFC. Chelsea had a very good start to the season, but things now are not going our way. Following the sacking of the previous manager, we have not made much progress; injuries have not helped either. It’s just been devastating for die-hard supporters. Potter needs time they say – but the ownership needs to understand that managers can’t be given ever-lasting time in this role. Should Potter go..? That’s another million-dollar question now!
