Gambling Commission invites feedback on deposit limit clarity

Key points:

– A consultation has been launched to refine the definition and communication of deposit limits in the Gambling Commission’s Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards (RTS)

– The aim is to improve understanding of various deposit limit types for consumers

– Feedback is being sought until 30 April 2025

The Gambling Commission in the UK has launched a consultation aimed at improving clarity and consistency in how deposit limits are defined and communicated to consumers, with changes planned to take effect on 31 October 2025.

The Gambling Commission’s new consultation focuses on deposit limits and other financial controls, aiming to enhance consumer awareness and control over their gambling.

The proposals seek to clarify how deposit limits are presented and to ensure consistency across operators, demanding that brands ‘make it easy’ for gamblers to review and alter their deposit limit after the first deposit.

The Gambling Commission states that the changes will: “Help consumers consider whether they want to change existing or set new deposit limits.”

Traditional deposit limits have typically been straightforward, capping the amount a consumer can deposit within a set timeframe. However, the introduction of ‘net deposit limits,’ which take withdrawals into account, has brought confusion.

For example, if a customer sets a £20 ($25.80) weekly deposit limit but withdraws £10, their deposit limit may increase to £30, causing potential misunderstandings and inconsistency in the application of regulations.

This latest consultation intends to build upon earlier proposals, inviting feedback from consumers, gambling operators and the public on the suggested changes.
