Key points:

– The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) has frozen over 5,000 bank accounts linked to online gambling, with transactions totalling more than IDR 600bn ($37m)

– The action is part of a wider anti-money laundering initiative involving government agencies and law enforcement bodies

The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) has frozen more than 5,000 accounts associated with online gambling. The total value of transactions recorded across these accounts exceeds IDR 600bn.

The measure is part of the National Movement for Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (Gernas APU/PPT), an initiative aimed at addressing illegal financial activities and reducing the social harm caused by online gambling.

PPATK is working with financial institutions, law enforcement, ministries and the public to develop a financial system that is resilient against illegal transactions. Gernas APU/PPT is intended to limit the scope for financial crime and safeguard national financial integrity.

Ivan Yustiavandana, PPATK Head, stated: “This law enforcement process that has been and will be carried out aims to save the public from online loan bondage (pinjol), narcotics, fraud, prostitution, and household destruction due to dependence on online gambling.

“Behind efforts to fight judol, the fact is that the Police and related institutions are saving the future of the Indonesian nation.”

He noted that other criminal activities are often a consequence of judol addiction, as individuals may commit offences to support their continued use.

PPATK carried out the account blocks as part of its mandate to monitor and analyse financial transactions in Indonesia. The agency continues to coordinate with law enforcement and other institutions to support ongoing investigations.
