Spelinspektionen fines Kindred subsidiary $1m for customer due diligence failings

Key points:

– Kindred Group subsidiary Spooniker has been fined SEK 10m for customer due diligence failings by the Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen

– The fine follows previous investigations into its operations

Swedish gaming regulator Spelinspektionen has issued a warning and fined Kindred-owned subsidiary Spooniker SEK 10m ($1m) for customer due diligence failings.

The fine and warning follows a previous inspection into the operator’s customer due diligence procedures, with the regulator noting that Spooniker has not collected sufficient information on where money is coming from.

Without this information, Spooniker is unable to determine if activity is legitimate, or done as a form of money laundering or terrorist financing.

The fine also follows changes in how anti-money laundering sanction fees are calculated. As the violations occurred before the change in calculations in June last year, this fine does not adhere to the new rules.

Indeed, Spooniker has faced at least two warnings from the regulator. In 2021, Spooniker won an appeal against Spelinspektionen after the regulator claimed it had allowed users to deposit more than the SEK 5,000 limit introduced in 2020.

Good to know: Spelinspektionen recently appointed Jenny Cisneros Örnberg to its Board, while Kindred itself is now owned by FDJ United

This was followed up in December 2024, when Spooniker was fined SEK 30m for providing unauthorised bonuses and lotteries.

In late March, Spelinspektionen also fined Glitnor Services and Roar Vegas SEK 28m and SEK 8m respectively. Both Glitnor and Roar Vegas were fined for breaching the duty of care section of the Gambling Act, with it being found with the former that, out of 12 audited by the regulator, 10 did not receive sufficient aid for problem gambling behaviours.

Three were aged 18-24 – a particularly vulnerable group in the eyes of the regulator.
