Buenos Aires politician seeks public support for gambling regulation

Key points:

– Garciarena has shared a form through his social media appealing for public signatures in support of his party’s gambling regulation bill

– One of the primary stated aims of the bill is to limit gambling addiction in children

– The social media post accuses Buenos Aires Governor, Axel Kicillof of inaction

Argentinian politician Diego R Garciarena has appealed to the public for support of a bill that would seek to combat child gambling addiction and regulate the online gambling industry in the country.

He has taken to X to share an online form through which citizens can register their approval of the bill – one of a number of pieces of gambling legislation that can boast some cross-party support.

Garciarena is a representative from the Radical Civic Union in Buenos Aires and his attempt to gauge public support is a response to the gridlock he perceives within the Buenos Aires Legislature.

The bill presented by Garciarena’s party has been moving slowly through the legislature since being introduced at the end of last year.

It would establish biometric validation systems on online betting sites as well as increased regulation around licenses and social media.

Garciarena has questioned the Governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, and his local administration for “looking the other way.”

Good to know: Argentina does not have a unified set of laws governing iGaming, with each of the 23 provinces regulating independently

In the post on social media, he also says: “Online betting is advancing unchecked,” and: “Our bill aims to prevent childhood gambling addiction.”

The video he has shared alongside the form refers to domestic news reports suggesting that gambling addiction is a growing issue within schools.

The Association of Private Schools of Argentina has complained that advertising and free bonuses supplied to children get them hooked without parents and teachers realising.

The form requires you to share your National Identity Document number to ensure that only Argentine citizens are able to offer their signature.
