Key points:

– Martin Liao has been appointed the new Chairman of the HKJC

– He succeeds former Chairman Michael T H Lee

– Liao described Lee as “the epitome of stable helmsmanship”

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has appointed Martin Liao as Chairman – the 27th in its history.

The appointment comes following an election by the Board of Stewards on 29 August, with Lester Huang appointed as Deputy Chairman. Liao’s appointment follows the previous Chairman, Michael T H Lee, who stood down from the Board following 19 years with the HKJC, the last three of which were are Chairman.

Alongside Liao’s appointment, Rimsky Yuen and John Lo were appointed to the Board for terms of two and three years, respectively. Yuen has been a part of the HKJC since 2001, becoming a voting member in 2020, while Lo joined in 2010, and became a voting member in 2021.

On succeeding Lee, Liao said: “Michael proved the epitome of stable helmsmanship during his tenure. He helped guide the Club through considerable change during the post-pandemic period, confronting challenges with resilience and calm while ensuring the Club upheld its strong commitment to the community. He leaves the Club as well placed as it has ever been to achieve its strategic goals in the years ahead.

Good to know: HKJC has initiatives with the goal of becoming an international sports entertainment brand. It has done this through various partnerships, including one with XIX Entertainment earlier this year.

“I am truly honoured to take up the Chairmanship of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. This is an especially exciting time for the Club, with its world-class racing and entertainment attracting growing numbers of fans in Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas, allied to the undoubted promise offered by equine industry development in the Greater Bay Area. Of course, the Club will remain focused on fulfilling its core and ultimate purpose: the betterment of society.”

The appointments come shortly after the appointment of Sarena Lin as Chief Transformation Officer. She will be responsible for the company’s roadmap, cross-division initiatives and implementing change, as the HKJC aims to become more data-driven and player-centric.
