Paul Johnson has been appointed to the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) Board.
Joining as one of two Member-Nominated Directors, Johnson was nominated by several horseracing associations, including the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and Racehorse Owners Association. He succeeds John Ferguson.
Johnson comes to the role with extensive industry experience. Currently, Johnson holds the title of Chief Executive at the National Trainers Federation (NTF), with responsibilities in strategy, leadership and commercial matters, and as part of the Thoroughbred Group, Industry Commercial Committee and NTF Council and Committees.
However, his career in gaming spans over 25 years, starting as a District Manager at Ladbrokes in 2000, where he stayed for seven years. He then became Commercial Leader for Procter & Gamble until the end of 2010, before joining the Racecourse Association at the start of 2011 as Racing Executive.
In April 2013, he was appointed Head of Racing and Racecourse for the BHA, where he stayed for over eight-and-a-half years, later moving on to the role of Chief Executive of the NTF, where he served from January 2022 to now.
Good to know: The BHA has called for HM Treasury to axe tax hikes to UK horseracing, with the industry set to strike from 10 September.
On his appointment to the Board, Johnson said: “I am pleased to be able to join the BHA Board as a Member-Nominated Director and consider it a great privilege to contribute to the ongoing development of the sport and its governance as we work towards the formation of a fully independent board.”
BHA Senior Independent Director David Jones added: “Paul will be a valuable addition to the BHA Board during the period of transition as we work towards the agreed approach to establish independent directors. This is an important step for the sport and Paul’s background and knowledge of the industry will support our efforts to secure a sustainable future for British racing, our people and horses.”
Both also thanked John Ferguson for his time on the Board.
Lord Charles Allen this week began his role as Chair of the BHA.
