Svenska Spel reflects on research council’s 15th anniversary and SEK 100m donations
The research council is tasked with overseeing the entire research grant process.
Key points:
– Svenska Spel’s independent research council turns 15 this year
– More than SEK 100m ($10.8m) has been awarded in grants in total
– This year has seen SEK 5m given to six projects so far
Svenska Spel is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its independent research council.
Since launching in 2010, the organisation has awarded over SEK 100m in grants to fund research into gambling and gambling harm.
Anna Johnson, Svenska Spel President and CEO, said: “Passing SEK 100m in research funding shows that we are serious about our long-term responsibility.
“The research has provided new knowledge about everything from young people’s gambling habits to how healthcare can be developed – insights that make society better equipped to prevent gambling problems and create safer gambling.”
When the council was first launched, research into gambling harm was still a fledgling idea that was not as championed as much as it is today.
Good to know: Last year, Svenska Spel received record numbers of people applying for funding for research into gambling addiction, prevention and treatment
Sara Lindholm Larsson, Research Council Chair, said: “It is a privilege to be able to contribute to the development of knowledge and evidence on this important subject.
“Through research, we can better understand what drives unhealthy gambling and which initiatives really have an effect.”
This year, six projects have been granted SEK 5m to share between them.
These include ‘Evaluating a family programme in social services for youth gaming and screen use’ and ‘How is the range of care offered for gambling developing, and how can we prevent suicide?’
The Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s Gambling Authority, recently published its figures revealing that regulated turnover increased by 6% quarter-on-quarter to SEK 7.02bn.
