Entain expects Grand National to be biggest sports betting event

Operator Entain is expecting an “unprecedented surge” in online bets for the UK’s Grand National.

The group believes there will be a big demand as it expects UK customers to take advantage of the offers available for this weekend’s event.

With betting shops still closed, Entain expects the races to become the UK’s biggest ever online sports betting event.

Entain offers its own technology to its Ladbrokes and Coral brands, which means customers betting this weekend will be supported by Entain for the first time this year as it completed a brand migration deal last year.

Overall, around 13 million people bet on the Grand National every year, representing roughly one third of UK adults.

Entain said that prior to the pandemic, around 40% of customers placed bets in its shops and expects the majority will now be online this year.

The company also estimates around four million online bets will be placed this weekend, which will be more than double that of previous events. This will amount to 10 times more than what last year’s FA cup final generated.

“We’re determined to give all customers a fast, thrilling and seamless experience notwithstanding unprecedented numbers betting online,” said Sandeep Tiku, COO at Entain.

“We’ve successfully completed one of the biggest migrations of brands and customers seen in our industry to our in-house global technology platform to give all our customers the best experience. We’re ready to handle many times the number of customer bets and logins per minute on Grand National day as on a very busy Saturday.”
