The news comes after former CEO Jenny Nilzon elected to leave the role having served five years with the organisation. Nilzon will continue to serve in her current capacity until the end of March.
Wennerberg Sedigh, who has over 20 years of experience in the gambling industry, has served as Senior Advisor at Sper for the past four years.
Patrik Hofbauer, Chairman, Sper, commented: “We on the board are extremely happy Maria will be the one to lead Sper further. She has a unique knowledge of the industry and I look forward to our collaboration. Of course, we think it's sad that Jenny quits and wish her great luck in her new role.”
Previously, the incoming CEO served as Senior Advisor for the Swedish Gambling Authority, in addition to holding roles at the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Communication and Ministry of Finance.
In her role as Inquiry Secretary, part of the Governmental Inquiry of Gambling Regulation, Wennerberg Sedigh was part of the team which advised on the updated Swedish gambling law, which came into effect in January 2019.
On her new appointment, Maria Wennerberg Sedigh commented: “It feels exciting and I am happy to have gained the trust. I will continue to develop Sper's work with self-regulation, consumer protection and industry confidence. A big and fun assignment awaits."
Outgoing CEO Nilzon is due to take up a new appointment outside the gambling industry.
Sper works with a number of betting operators and government regulators in Sweden, including the likes of Betsson Group and Mr Green.
