The Swedish Gaming Authority, Spelinspektionen, has released financial figures for the second quarter of 2024, highlighting overall growth in the gambling market in the country.
In total, turnover across all verticals reached SEK 6.89bn ($663.43m), representing an increase of 2.8% year-on-year and a rise when compared to the SEK 6.67bn recorded in Q1 2024.
When compared to the same period last year, however, only commercial online gambling and land-based commercial gaming saw growth, with community games, hall bingo registering the same figure of SEK 52m as last year, while games for public purposes, national lotteries, state lottery and slot games, and state casino game (Casino Cosmopol) seeing declines in turnover.
As would be expected, commercial online gambling covered the majority of Swedish gambling turnover, reaching SEK 4.57bn during the quarter, also going up 9.2% year-on-year.
State lottery and slot games was the next-highest category at SEK1.29bn, but this was a decrease of 7.5%, while games for public purposes, national lotteries dropped from SEK 896m in Q2 2023 to SEK 893m in Q2 2024.
Land-based commercial gaming grew by 5.7% to SEK 56m, but state casino game (Casino Cosmopol) suffered a decline of 73.8% compared to the same period last year.
This comes as Casino Cosmopol is set to be discontinued, with it struggling to make a profit, highlighted by Svenska Spel seeing profit go down 19% in H1.
On top of this, Spelinspektionen has reported that at the end of the quarter, 112,000 people were banned from gambling through Spelpaus.se, an increase of 1.7% compared to the previous quarter.
