Danish Gambling Authority expands efforts to combat illegal gambling

The latest efforts include a collaboration with the streaming platform Twitch and increased oversight of a growing betting trend involving the video game currency ‘Robux.’

Danish Gambling Authority expands efforts to combat illegal gambling

Key points:

– The Danish Gambling Authority has partnered with Twitch to combat illegal gambling content, expanding its existing collaborations with Apple, Google and Facebook

– ‘Robux betting,’ where Roblox’s in-game currency is used for gambling, has emerged as a concern, particularly for underage players

– A 2024 court ruling confirmed that Robux gambling sites targeting Danish users fall under Danish gambling regulations and require proper licensing

The Danish Gambling Authority has released its 2024 report detailing its initiatives to combat illegal gambling in Denmark.

Each year, the Danish Gambling Authority outlines its enforcement actions and clarifies the legal framework surrounding gambling in Denmark.

In 2024, the authority strengthened its regulatory reach by partnering with Twitch, allowing it to report illegal gambling content on the platform.

This initiative mirrors existing collaborations with Apple, Facebook and Google, which enable the authority to remove unauthorised gambling content from these platforms.

Another key area of focus in the report is the rise of ‘Robux betting,’ a practice where the in-game currency from the video game Roblox is used as a deposit or prize in online gambling activities.

Good to know: Currently, no operators hold a licence to offer skin betting or Robux betting in Denmark, making all such activity illegal

The authority has identified numerous third-party websites facilitating this form of betting, often targeting young players.

Since Robux can be converted into real-world currency through Roblox’s Developer Exchange Program (DevEx), its use in gambling is classified under Denmark’s existing betting and casino laws.

The Court of Frederiksberg ruled in August 2024 that websites offering Robux-based gambling with Danish-language content are considered to be targeting the Danish market and must comply with Danish gambling regulations.

The Danish Gambling Authority is encouraging the public to report suspicious gambling activity to support its enforcement efforts.
