Gambling Commission bans certain casino promotions and caps wagering requirements

The changes are intended to protect customers and will come into effect on 19 December 2025.

Gambling Commission bans certain casino promotions and caps wagering requirements

Key points:

– The Gambling Commission has cracked down on the promotions casinos can offer players

– This includes a ban on promotions that involve mixed products

– The wagering requirement will also be limited to ten

The Gambling Commission has introduced new rules in regards to what types of offers and promotions casinos can offer customers.

The first change is a ban on mixed product promotions, such as bonuses which ask customers to play casino games as well as play sports bets.

According to the Commission, “evidence shows consumers are more at risk of harm when they gamble on multiple products rather than a single product” and there’s a risk that the extra products can cause confusion when it comes to the terms and conditions placed on the bonus.

The ban on mixed product promotions “is aimed at reducing harm and boosting fairness and openness.”

The second change will see the maximum wagering requirement lowered to ten.

If a casino has a 50x wagering requirement, then a player who deposits a £10 bonus must play through £500 before the winnings can be withdrawn. “Such high wagering requirements could confuse consumers and lead them to gamble for longer and faster than they are used to,” the Commission explained.

It’s believed that lowering this requirement will decrease “the likelihood of harm, reduces complexity and improves transparency while maintaining consumer choice.”

Good to know: These changes are part of the Autumn 2023 consultations into socially responsible incentives, which introduced possible wager requirement caps of one, five or ten

These changes will come into force on 19 December 2025.

Tim Miller, Executive Director for Research and Policy, said: “These changes will better protect consumers from gambling harm and give consumers much better clarity on, and certainty of, offers before they decide to sign up.”

Last month, the Gambling Commission set new rules for deposit limits which included additional protections for customer funds.
