UK regulator opens inquiry into Sportradar’s proposed acquisition of IMG Arena
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has launched an initial review of Sportradar’s plan to acquire IMG Arena
Key points:
– The CMA is investigating whether the deal could reduce competition in UK markets
– Comments from interested parties are open
– A formal phase 1 investigation has not yet begun
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an inquiry into Sportradar Group AG’s proposed acquisition of IMG Arena US Parent, LLC after the company has announced its acquisition of IMG Arena’s sports portfolio with FY24 results.
The announcement is the beginning of a preliminary evidence-gathering phase during which the CMA is soliciting public input on whether the transaction could lessen competition in the UK market.
The regulator has not yet launched a formal phase 1 investigation but is seeking written comments from interested parties.
The invitation to comment focuses on whether the acquisition might result in a “relevant merger situation” under the Enterprise Act 2002 and, if so, whether that situation may harm market competition.
The CMA’s current inquiry is limited to information gathering. No formal action has been taken and a deadline for a phase 1 decision has not been set.
Good to know: Sportradar partnered with Dazn for FIFA Club World Cup coverage and signed an integrity agreement with Brazil’s Ministry of Sports
Interested parties can submit views on the competitive implications of the merger to the CMA and comments may cover any concerns about market dominance, service impact or other regulatory issues.
The CMA’s investigation will determine whether the acquisition should proceed, be modified, or face further scrutiny.
